In the UK, 31% of men and 28% of women, have high blood pressure, that's an astonishing 59% of the adult population. Taking other factors into consideration such as inactivity, being overweight / obese, there’s a clear connection between your diet and your risk of suffering heart problems. According to research in clinical nutrition, a lack of fruit and vegetables and an excess of animal products that produce a high acid overload that leads to hypertension & heart disease. Whereas an alkaline diet is full of minerals like potassium and magnesium, both of which keep the blood pressure healthy and a minimised risk of heart disease and other health issues.
Its no hidden secret, that the western diet, is mainly filled with fast food, processed food, meat and dairy, caffeine and alcohol. As all of these are acid forming, we are overloading our bodies and making it work even harder to digest our food, using much needed minerals & energy than it needs to. The alkaline diet is based on the fact, that in order for your body to function optimally and healthily, you need to maintain a pH balance of between 7.35 - 7.45, which is the perfect range for oxygen to be carried around the body.

The alkaline diet rests on the acidic / alkaline theory of health & disease. When we digest food we have eaten and get the energy from it (calories), our digestive system acts to burn the food to get the energy. This process then leaves waste, which can either be alkaline or acidic depending on what you’ve eaten. If you tend to eat a lot of processed food, sugar, refined or fried foods, you're left with acidic waste, which over time will lead to chronic inflammation, leave your immune system weakened & prone to disease. The great news is, our organs are heroes at neutralising & eliminating acid waste but like any system, it can get overwhelmed, especially when it has to work constantly without respite. Know the feeling, right? Everything has a limit before it starts to falter. By eating alkaline forming foods such as vegetables, fruit, leafy greens, sprouted grains, seeds, nuts and root vegetables. Aka EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD FOR YOU, we begin to reduce the overload of our systems, therefore it doesn’t have to work so hard. Our digestive system will then become more reliable and efficient. We have all suffered from bloating, constipation, loose bowels, IBS, my stomach is so sensitive, I know within 20 minutes if I’ve eaten something that doesn’t agree with me.
